Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared during his visit to Washington that the Russian president's decision to request talks with the US president indicates Moscow is feeling pressure. He remarked, "It's evident that Moscow is scrambling to restart dialogue immediately after it learns of Tomahawks." This statement referred to earlier musings about supplying advanced missiles to the Ukrainian military.

Political Developments and International Reactions

A former American diplomat, a foreign policy expert, observed, "Putin is attempting to derail the progress toward greater sanctions on Russia." Fried continued, "We'll see on Friday, but the chances of moving toward a truce by pressuring Moscow to engage sincerely appear to have decreased."

The situation came after the US president had recently been strengthening his rhetoric toward Russia until Thursday's conversation with Putin, which the Russian government described as "extremely frank and trustful."

European Energy Restrictions and Market Effects

EU authorities have set a mandate for energy importers into the European Union to prove their products are not made from Russian oil, as stated in a official guideline published on recently. This measure is part of the European Union's upcoming prohibition on purchases of fuels processed from Russian petroleum, which is included in its 18th sanctions package against Russia over its military actions in Ukraine.

Financial experts observed that trading patterns appeared to be considering the potential end of Indian imports of Russian oil. Several Indian refiners are preparing to cut purchases from Russia, with projections of a phased decrease, as reported by sources familiar with the matter.

"This is a favorable turn for the oil market as it would remove a big customer of Russian oil," said Tony Sycamore, adding that oil prices were stable on Thursday.

Security Developments and Infrastructure Attacks

A massive Moscow's unmanned aircraft and rocket attack hit energy infrastructure in eastern Ukraine on the same day, causing disruptions in multiple regions. Ukrainian officials reported that Russian forces deployed hundreds of unmanned vehicles and many of missiles, along with aerial munitions.

"During this fall, the Russian forces use daily opportunities to strike at our energy infrastructure," said Ukraine's president, noting that attacks affected the regions of Chernihiv, eastern Ukraine, central Ukraine, Sumy and western Ukraine.

Global Political Responses

Ukraine's envoy to Washington, Olga Stefanishyna, asserted that Moscow showed its true attitude to negotiations through the "violence" of such strikes. "Russia yet again chose weapons over talks, turning this attack into a direct setback to ongoing peace efforts," Stefanishyna commented.

At the same time, the European Union's top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, stated that the EU had little option but to build up anti-drone defences against Russian threats. Kallas announced a "roadmap" to prepare for potential conflict by the end of the decade, including a new defensive network to be fully operational by the end of 2027.

The proposed system, called the "European drone defence initiative," is expected to begin working in its first phase by the end of 2026 and be fully functioning by the following year. EU authorities hopes to obtain the backing of member state representatives at a summit next week.
