Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the option to question specific rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in operation at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can request.

Practical Application

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
