The distinctive yellow-fronted residential building visible behind assisted us verify the video.

Our team is verifying images and video shared earlier today that purport to show the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials state fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.

Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed to his injuries. A probe is under way.

Our starting point to check the location from which the pictures were from was based on posts indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.

Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex captured in the video.

Identifying additional buildings, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the pictures were taken.

Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the images had not been manipulated.
