"We have achieved victories where maybe it seemed unlikely, by executing the correct decision as a group," Verstappen added. "The partnership with my team on the pit wall and the entire crew... we are really well integrated."

With the paddock arrive in Abu Dhabi, the mathematics is utterly compelling.

• The championship leader is in position to win his maiden world title if he outpaces both his two rivals or secures a top-three position.
• The challenger must win and needs that Norris is not in the top three.
