Significant Upheaval Projected: Britain's Most Severe Climate Crisis Scenarios Unveiled by Scientists
The most severe potential impacts of the climate crisis for the UK have been detailed by researchers, ranging from a blistering 4C jump in temperatures to a 6.5-foot increase in sea levels. A separate possibility envisions a decline of 6C in temperature following the failure of crucial Atlantic Ocean currents, which would massively disrupt agriculture and energy demand.
Possible Events, Not Forecasts
These consequences, some of which are linked to critical climate thresholds, are viewed as low probability but plausible. The scientists stated that these projections plugged a hole in risk assessment that had rendered the UK unprepared for catastrophic possibilities.
"The worst-case scenarios we have detailed should not be seen as certainties, but they are plausible," said Nigel Arnell who directed the study. "The UK has been making preparations lacking the methods to test against worst-case scenarios. We've now provided decision-makers what they need to get ready for environmental results they pray never occur, but must not overlook."
A Spectrum of Extreme Weather Scenarios
A further series of severe models maps the possible scale of harsh climate between now and the close of the 2100s. These indicate that thermometer readings could rocket in certain periods by up to 6C above average, while precipitation could be three times normal levels.
The probability of the worst-case outcomes coming to pass could not be calculated due to uncertainty about what steps will be taken to address global warming and how the climate system will behave. This approach was likened to national security risk assessments or stress tests for financial systems.
Key Scenario Details
- 4C Temperature Rise: Planetary heating soaring past 4C by 2100 could happen if emissions cuts breaks down or if strong feedback loops including the tropical forests becoming a net carbon source emit its huge repository of carbon. This would result in severe and lengthy heat domes and dry spells plaguing the UK in summer.
- AMOC Shutdown: A critical sea current, the North Atlantic current, is slowing down and showing signs of collapse due to climate change. A collapse beginning in 2030 would lead to a 6C cooling in the UK. "Crop production would face immense difficulties and freshwater availability would be fundamentally reshaped," noted the lead researcher.
- Sudden Ocean Inundation: A increase of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could take place if glaciers in the polar regions disintegrate quickly, inundating low-lying areas. In contrast to the other scenarios, this risk is already understood by coastal engineers.
- Pollution Paradox: Temperatures could also be increased by about 0.75C if industrial aerosols is rapidly cleaned up. This paradoxical outcome occurs because tiny specks from burning coal scatter sunlight from reaching the ground.

The study developed the severe projections using a combination of past data and records, climate models and climate physics. The possibilities do not take into account broader worldwide issues such as the agricultural collapse and increased conflict.
The research was commissioned as part of a official climate resilience programme. Previous assessments have warned that too little consideration was being allocated to high-consequence, low-probability risks.
An independent advisory body has stated that the UK must "become resilient to moderate heating" and evaluate the risks for four degrees. Earlier government strategies have been labeled being "insufficient" by environmental groups.
