Nutrition Assistance Set to Expire for 41 Million Amid Prolonged Government Closure

The United States Department of Agriculture stated on Saturday that nutrition assistance payments through a critical national support systems will not be distributed during the coming month amid the persistent government funding lapse.

Impasse Persists Into 25th Day

The funding lapse lasted three and a half weeks when the announcement was made, which followed calls from over 200 Congressional Democrats pushing the department to utilize emergency reserves to cover the upcoming nutrition payments.

“Bottom line, the well has run dry,” the USDA stated. “Now, there will be no benefits issued” on 1 November.

National Consequences

Over 40 million Americans count on these monthly payments, as reported by official statistics. In certain states, including New Mexico, dependence on this assistance affects one-fifth of the population.

A memo obtained by journalists revealed that the department would not access contingency funding to cover next month's assistance.

Partisan Impasse

Republicans and Democrats are still at odds about the way to finance and restart federal agencies.

Remarks from the director at a budget research center suggested that federal leadership had opportunities to prepare in advance to prevent benefits from running out.

“It could have, and should have taken steps earlier to make arrangements to access these resources,” the comments added. “Rather, they might decide against it to secure political leverage” as conservative leaders work to push upper chamber Democrats to support legislation to restart government operations.

Emergency Measures

State leaders from two affected states activated emergency protocols this week to free up resources to combat potential hunger preparing for SNAP benefits not being issued in November.
