Gavin Newsom States He Is Evaluating a Presidential Campaign for 2028

Gavin Newsom, a well-known member of the Democratic party, has indicated that he intends to decide on whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 once the 2026 congressional elections are over.

"Absolutely, it would be dishonest if I said no," the governor commented when pressed about seriously considering a White House bid following the 2026 elections. "I'd just be lying. And I'm not."

The governor's current term as California's leader wraps up in early 2027, and term limits prevent another run. However, he cautioned that any determination is still years away.

"It's up to destiny," he added.

Growing Prominence as a Political Adversary

Newsom has stepped forward as a high-profile critic of the Trump administration, employing his online platforms and championing a proposition that would increase the party's congressional seats in response to GOP gerrymandering. This strategy has made him a target from critics.

Federal Funding Dispute

Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that Newsom does not care about Californians in a weekend appearance on a major news network. The secretary revealed a strategy to withhold government money from the state and warned suspending the authority to provide commercial driver's licenses.

"I plan to withdraw a significant sum from California," Duffy stated, following a recent tragic collision in the state involving an undocumented semi truck driver that led to fatalities and injured individuals.

Newsom's office pointed out that the federal government had approved the individual's authorization on several occasions, which enabled him to obtain a CDL under national regulations.

The transportation secretary had before indicated he was withholding additional funds from California for not enforcing language proficiency rules for truck drivers.

Firm Rebuttal from the Administration

"One-time television figure, now Secretary of Transportation, continues to misunderstand federal law," Newsom's office retorted in a recent comment countering the funding warnings. "For now, in contrast to this person, we focus on reality: The state's commercial driver's license holders had a fatal crash rate nearly 40% lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the single state with more commercial holders – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Facts don't lie. The Trump administration does."

Polling Data and Future Prospects

A recently conducted survey found that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and 48% of all registered voters believed that Newsom should run for the White House in 2028. In recent years, Newsom's favorability has increased to an mean of a third from approximately 30%, while his disapproval has decreased from an average of more than 40% to 38.4%.

In previous months, the governor stated while visiting several key regions that he had "no idea" about his intentions for 2028.

He also referenced his past difficulties, including being found to have a learning disability at the age of five.

"The idea that a guy who got 960 on his SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was often seated at the back – the fact that this is even suggested is, by itself, amazing," he said. "Who the hell knows? I am eager to see who steps forward in 2028 and who meets that moment. And that's the question for the U.S. citizens."
