Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed fury after former President Donald Trump charged a coalition of Democratic congress members of being "turncoats" and stated they should be arrested and penalized "through capital punishment" following their posting of a controversial video.
The Message That Provoked the Debate
The clip, published on Tuesday, features six Democratic congress members who previously worked in defense or intelligence roles.
"Similar to us, you all swore an pledge to safeguard and defend this national charter," the officials declared in the short video. "Currently, the risks to our governing document aren't just from abroad, but from domestically. Our statutes are clear, you can reject unlawful commands, you can reject improper directives, you should reject unlawful commands. No one has to carry out directives that violate the statutes or our founding principles."
The Former President's Angry Reaction
The video message reportedly trigger a heated reaction from the ex-president.
On later in the week, Trump wrote on his social media platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional post, he declared: "This is really serious, and Risky to our Nation. Their words cannot be permitted to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also redistributed a declaration that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Leaders Answer
Following Trump's statements on that day, Top Democrats published a combined statement denouncing the statements.
"Partisan aggression has no role in America," they stated. "Representatives who participated in the video all acted our nation with exceptional patriotism and distinction. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's offensive and dangerous calls for execution against members of Congress, and urge Republican lawmakers to forcefully do the same."
The opposition officials also stated that they had been in communication with protective services "to make certain the protection of these members and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must right away delete these unhinged social media posts and withdraw his violent language before he causes harm," the declaration added.
Officials' Firm Answer
The lawmakers who were featured in the video also released a declaration.
"We are veterans and defense specialists who value this United States and took an vow to defend and support the constitution of the United States," they said. "This commitment is permanent, and we aim to maintain it. No warning, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will stop us from that sacred obligation."
"The significant point is that the president considers it subject to penalty by capital punishment for us to repeat the statutes," they stated. "Our service members should recognize that we have their backs as they fulfill their oath to the founding principles and responsibility to adhere to only lawful orders. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They continued: "All citizens must unite and censure the ex-president's requests for our execution and partisan aggression. This is a moment for principled stance."
Additional Governmental Responses
The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's comments and published on online networks: "Let's be crystal clear: the ex-commander in chief is requesting the execution of elected officials."
He added: "This represents an outright THREAT. All senators, every Representative, every American – without partisan consideration – should condemn this without delay and without qualification."
The GOP leader supported Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "rebellion", labeling the video as "wildly inappropriate", stating: "This constitutes very risky, you have important representatives of Congress telling military personnel to ignore directives, I think that is without precedent in American history."
The GOP official also reportedly told the press that in what he examined of Trump's publications, Trump was "explaining the crime of treason" but that "attorneys have to examine the language and establish all that."
Administration Response
During a executive branch meeting on that day, when questioned by a reporter, "Is the president want to kill members of Congress?", the administration spokesperson replied: "No."
"Let's be clear about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the spokesperson declared. "You have current representatives of the federal government who coordinated to arrange a recorded statement to members of the US military, to current military personnel encouraging them to defy the commander in chief's lawful orders."
She said: "The sanctity of our armed forces rests on the hierarchy, and if that chain of command is violated, it can lead to people getting killed, it can result in disorder, and precisely what these elected officials ... are basically promoting."
