Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones maintains he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team secured a decisive win.
“It was regrettable. That was kind of an interaction with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “There was a large group of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was brimming with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was completely accidental, occurring amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I just put up the wrong finger,” he noted. “It was inadvertently performed. This is sincere. If you want to call it accidental, you can. But it got resolved pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Owner Penalties
This is not the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases involve:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in early 2024.
